Can you leave brass in water?
Water can also contribute to aging your brass, so you want to make sure you aren't submerging them into too much water. The more regular upkeep efforts you take, the easier and quicker it'll be to restore your item. But just remember, aging and natural tarnishing are alright.
Once in contact with water, electrochemical reactions take place on brass, resulting in Zn and Cu dissolution as the anodic reaction and hydroxyl ion generation as the main cathodic reaction (Fig.
It's only a guestimate, of course, but after 150 years submerged in cool fresh water, a small coin sized piece of brass would probably be corroded beyond recognition. Bronze or copper would survive in much better condition, original imprints likely being discernible.
Brass: Brass doesn't rust because it has a relatively minuscule amount of iron in it. It can, however, form a bluish patina from oxygen exposure over time. This does not affect the structural integrity of the metal like rust does. Copper: Copper can corrode, but it's not as destructive as iron oxide.
Brass architecture, however, behaves similarly to copper when exposed to air and water — it'll take on a blue-green color. Because brass is two-thirds copper — so it behaves similarly over time. Brass's patina effect is a little more green; copper's color is closer to blue.
The first sign of dezincification of brass is a change in colour, from the yellow typically found in brass to the salmon pink of pure copper metal. The pink colour may then turn reddish and then brown if the surface copper corrodes to form cuprite.
Brass pipes can still do harm, due to the increase in pH and alkalinity, and that Copper pipes appear to be the safest pipes to use for drinking water transportation as it did not leech significant amount of metal, compared to black steel and brass.
The best way to differentiate between bronze and brass metal alloys is by examining the tarnish on your piece. Bronze tends to tarnish brown while brass might turn black. Another indicator is the color and how the object reflects light. If the piece is yellow with a shiny finish, it is likely brass instead of bronze.
Don't wear your metal jewelry in the shower or swimming. Water can be very harsh on metals. Avoid storing brass and gold-plated jewelry in the bathroom or humid environments. Humidity is very bad for metals and will cause them to tarnish.
Unfortunately, your beautiful brass or stainless steel faucets are vulnerable to the mineral deposits from hard water. As the water circulates, it leaves a trail of chlorine and magnesium deposits in its wake. As these unsightly deposits worsen over time, they become impossible to clean off.
Does brass leach into water?
Water sitting for several hours or overnight in a brass faucet can leach lead from the brass faucet interior which may produce high lead levels in the first draw of drinking water.
A: You can shower in gold-plated brass, but it might not be the best idea. Gold-plated brass can tarnish when exposed to water and humidity. If you must shower with your jewelry on, try to avoid letting the water hit it directly and dry it off as soon as you can afterward.

Could be two years if you just let it go its natural course! But before you pour yourself another drink – I also have some good news. You can safely and easily speed up the natural aging process and encourage the brass to tarnish almost instantly.
Wet chlorine, that's either gaseous or liquid chlorine having more than 150 parts per million of water by weight, is highly corrosive and will aggressively attack iron, steel, some stainless steel, Monel®, nickel, copper, brass, bronze, and lead.
Chronic brass poisoning has been reported and is characterized by the appearance of anemia and green line at the base of the teeth (due to a large proportion of copper) along with palpitation, dyspnea on exertion, dyspeptic symptoms, anorexia and epigastric pains, nausea, vomiting, and colic [4].
There is no known level of lead exposure that is considered safe. Old copper pipes may have lead-based solder and brass fitting can leach lead into drinking water.
