Americans can travel to most European, Caribbean, and Central and South American countries without a visa, along with many other popular tourism destinations. Countries that U.S. passport holders need visas to enter include Russia, India, China, Vietnam, Turkey, and more, and others require e-visas to visit.

The US passport ranks 41st in the world as of June 2023 according to VisaGuide Passport Index. This means that US citizens can travel visa-free to 146 countries in the world. However, to enter the remaining countries, US passport holders must apply for a visa beforehand.

Some countries that have restrictions on US passport holders are North Korea, Iran, Syria, Yemen, and Libya. It is difficult for US citizens to be granted a visa to travel to these countries.

All sponsors must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be at least 18 years old, and be living in the United States (including territories and possessions) when they file the affidavit of support.

What is the easiest visa to get for US? ›

Canada – 180 days

Oh, Canada, our friends to the North. Unsurprisingly, they have one of the longest visa-less allowances for US citizens. If you want to move somewhere different but don't want a huge culture shock or learn a new language (with the exception of Quebec), Canada is an ideal option.

ESTA is required for foreign nationals visiting the U.S. for up to 90 days for sightseeing or other purposes, and they must complete the ESTA application process prior to boarding their U.S.-bound flight or vessel. A visa, on the other hand, is required for stays of longer than 90 days.

No. A refusal, or ineligibility, under section 214(b) is for that specific application, so once a case is closed, the consular section cannot take any further action.

Please see “Administrative Processing” for further information. If you were advised at the interview that a waiver of ineligibility is required before the visa can be issued, you can expect your application to take between 6 to 8 months to process from the date of the interview.

You can expect to be at the Embassy or Consulate for approximately two to three hours. The interview with a consular officer is the last step in a two-step process and typically lasts just a few minutes.
