How do I remove USB virtual printer port (2023)

  Well thanks for the thoughts but it doesn't work!!

  After Add I have to select local port or network - so I'll try local (otherwise I get a list of network printers)

  I type the name of the computer in hostname and it searches but doesn't find anything because the printer is connected to a USB port. It eventually gives up and asks me for more info on the network card.

  The problem has mostly gone away because I have a second USB printer and was able to use that to create a second USB port..

  Then i discovered if I just plug the installed USB printer into a different port it gives me another USB port. So now I cna go back to the first installation of this printer, and change its driver and port to get two printers pointing at the same port.

  Hi,

  It's confused about your description.

  but I cant see the virtual USB ports in device manager

  And that allowed me to get rid of the ports from the registry but they were still visible in Devices adn printers under ports (after slecting a device)

  So did you see these ports from device manager or not actually?

  Please try this:

  1. Type MMC on the run box
  2. Click on the file
  3. And then to the Add Remove Snap in
  4. Choose Print Management
  5. Now click on the “Add Local server” button
  6. Select the driver from the print management
  7. Then to the Print Servers and the to the machine
  8. Now Right click the Printer Driver and remove the same.

  NOTE:You can't remove a printer if you have items in the print queue. If items are waiting to print when you try to remove a printer, Windows will wait until printing is complete, and then remove the printer. If you have permission to manage documents on the printer, you can also cancel all print jobs and then try to remove the printer again.

  1. I cannot see (or dont know where to look) virtual USB ports in Device Manager. DM has only hubs and controllers under USB and COM under Ports

  2 Your suggestion: I was doing fine until step 6 but cant see anywhere to select driver
  

  Is this the same as Control Panel-Admin Tools->Print Management?
  

  If so I have been there, selected the printers and removed the driver package.
  Ther are no signs of the HP printer anywhere inb drivers or printers in Print management.

  If I reboot (just in case) return to Devices and printers, select, for example, XPS Doc writer then Printing Preferences->Ports shows USB001 and USB002 (but no printer next to them)

  Hi,

  Yes, it's same as Control Panel-Admin Tools->Print Management.

  In addition, according to your description, you have remove the printer form your computer completely.

  USB001 is the default printer port for USB printers and is the first port Windows selects when connecting a printer via the operating system's Devices and Printers "Add a Printer" utility. The printer installation process is done via the utility’s wizard, which walks you through selecting a port, installing the proper driver for the printer and printing a test page. Once the installation process is complete, the printer is assigned to the USB001 port until you uninstall it, if desired.

  USB002 is also a Virtual Printer Port that appears if USB001 is already in use with another USB printer. The port works the same as USB001 in allowing you to select it for your USB printer and completing the installation process.

  ThusI would like to suggest you re-add your printer for test.

  Yes indeed.

  I was trying to get rid of all USB printing ports to ensure a clean start when I reinstalled the printers that were causing problems. I never managed to get rid of USB001 and USB002 until recently (and no, I have no idea what I actually did that got rid of them).

  Anyway, I now have just USB001; I installed the printer and it works fine. I rebooted the computer before installing the second printer but I still only have USB001 which makes it hard to install the second printer. If I plug in a second usb printer, does W7 create USB002? Can I then assign it to a different printer?

  I am trying to install a second printer (to point at the same pyshical printer) because the 6MP Postscript printer defaults to Postscript operation and that is very slow when printing graphics. So I want to be able to chose whether to print postscript (by selecting the postscript driver) or PCL (by selecting the 6MP driver)

  How can I do this?

  Hi,

  Yes,you could create a new port for other printer. Of course, you also assign it to a different printif you don't use this printer.

  The detailed steps are below:

  1. Click the START button, click navigate to "Control Panel", then navigate to and click on "Printers."

  2. Once the printers window is open, click on "Add a printer" in the dark blue menu bar.

  3. At the "Choose a printer port" section click on the "Create a new port" radio button then select "Standard TCP/IP Port" for the "Type of port."

  4. At the "Type a printer hostname or IP Address" section select "TCP/IP Device" for "Device type" and input the proper hostname depending on the printer that you are installing, the IPs for all of the different departmental printers can be gotten from the main printer help page on this website.

  5. At the "Type a printer name" section type in what you would like to call the printer under the "Printer name" section, this is entirely up to you. Here you also want to make sure that the driver that it says it will install corresponds with the model of printer you are installing.

  6. After the installation you should get a section called "You've successfully added [printername]." Here you should click the "Print a test page" button to make sure everything is installed correctly.
